How much did Billy Beane make from 'Moneyball'? Oakland Athletics Executive Vice President's fortune

Publish date: 2024-05-09

Billy Beane is the Executive Vice President for the Oakland Athletics. He was initially the General Manager, after which he invested as a minority owner and was subsequently named Vice President. He is well known for his sabremetric tactics, popularly known as Moneyball, that elevated the A's into a solid team.

Athletics have been a franchise with limited funds. They regularly come in the lower half of the total salary spending list in the MLB. However, a major turnaround took place in 2002 when Billy Beane's tactics changed the fortunes of the Oakland team. They posted a 103-59 season and were the first team in 100+ years to win 20 consecutive games, and set the American League record.

Billy Beane started off as a scout in the Athletics system. As a player, he didn't find much success and played in the MLB for 6 years. In 1990, he was relegated to the minor leagues. Weary of his time as a player in the minor leagues, he switched over to front office work.

Under General Manager Sandy Alderson, the Athletics were forced to slash their payroll. They had to rely on sabremetric principles, where a team would build a competitive roster based on undervalued players who would come good when needed. They relied on OBS as a metric for hitters, a stat that was largely ignored previously.

This proved to be influential as the A's made playoff runs. In 1997, Beane succeeded Alderson as manager and drew a salary of $1 million. In 2002, with the help of analyst Paul DePodesta, the Ahletics posted one of the greatest regular seasons in the league. A book called Moneyball was written about the season, which was later adapted into a movie by the same name, starring Brad Pitt.

After the season, the Boston Red Sox approached Beane to take up the General Manager job at Boston. The salary was a record-breaking $12.5 million that Beane turned down, choosing to stay on at Oakland instead. He would remain manager until 2016, before being promoted to Executive Vice President.

What is Billy Beane's current net worth?

Billy Beane's estimated fortunes are currently estimated to be around $20 million. He currently makes $3 million per year at the Athletics. Given that he turned down a massive offer from Boston a couple of decades ago, it is easy to say that his net worth might have been much more had he taken the deal.

Regardless, Beane continues to be a huge inspiration for managers and executives who look up to him for inspiration.
