AFL: Geelong stars take hilarity to new levels with Mad Monday costumes

It’s come a month earlier than last year, but Geelong’s Mad Monday has again delivered with a shot at the AFL’s goal review system among the costumes confirming the reigning premier’s status as the best at the end-of-year craziness.

Retiring star Issac Smith dressed as Adelaide midfielder Ben Keays, with Tom Hawkins and Cam Guthrie the goalposts a week after the Crows’ heartbreaking loss to Sydney that ended their finals dream.

Club legend Billy Brownless was even on hand to call for the goal review that never eventuated but prompted a change in officiating for the finals.

Gryan “Lionel Messi” Miers and teammate Max Holmes arrived together with hilarious intent.

Miers dressed up as football superstar Messi and Holmes as broadcaster Gerard Whateley, who was trolled on social media courtesy of a fake quote that said he compared Messi to Miers.

The fake post had Whateley holding a football with the quote: “Gryan Miers is to AFL what Leo Messi is to soccer. Messi may kick more goals, but Miers scans the field just as well. Maybe even better than Messi does.”

Whateley’s plea of innocence in his own post was on a sign being held up by Holmes, who said “Delete the tweet”’ as he walked into the Wharf Shed in Geelong for the celebrations, with TV cameras and photographers at the ready.

The Cats have become famous for their Mad Monday costumes, with a horde of players dressing up as old people after last year’s stunning premiership success.
